New Scientist Reports, that soon will pass the contests between 11 commands, each of which will advance its auto- with robotized control. It will pass competition on the specially modelled route with a length of 60 miles (96 km). Robot- racers had to independently determine the optimum route of advance on the urban streets, with the ride soblyudat' the rule of road motion, follow signs and road marking. The race of robots was called name Urban Grand Challenge and it will be carried out under the patronage of agency on the development of the shielding designs of the Pentagon. The previous stage of program was passed to desert during October of past year. Then route had a length of 212 km. In the the desert Grand Challenge conquered the crews of the universities of Stanford and Carnegie mellon, put-out, correspondingly, modified Volkswagen and Chevrolet. Both commands are intended to participate, also, in the urban stage of competitions. The automobiles, which participate in the races are equipped with the mass of diverse sensors and sensors, including the laser detectors of direction, radars, GPS- navigators. All information from the sensors enters several computers, established in the auto- and united between themselves into the network, there it is processed, after which the signals are transferred to the control elements of automobile. Each of 11 commands, which will participate in the urban auto-race, obtained Grant in size of millions of dollars to the preparation (competition in the desert was passed without the external financial support). Thus, if race passes successfully, the automobile and computer branches of industry will make one additional step towards each other, and we somewhat will approach the fact that all places in the automobile will become passenger.
