Robot and robotechnology news
01.01.1970 //One-armed robot will help molecular biologists.
One-armed robot will facilitate conducting the research works, dedicated to the use of bonding energy for industrial purposes, for example, the production of fuel ethanol from the fibrous withdrawals of the cultivation of corn. The new robot, enrolled into the staff of the colleagues of the service of the agricultural studies THE USA (g. of peoriya, the state of Illinois), is the basic element of the automated system, which was called name "flexible production module of functional proteomiki from the work with the plasmids" ("plasmid-based functional proteomics work cell"). According to molecular biologist Stephen Hughes (Stephen Hughes), this first in its kind robotized line, which makes it possible to fully automate several research procedures, which were being traditionally carried out by hand. The brief list of the functions carried out by robot is included: the isolation of genetic material from the cells of plants, bacteria and other organisms; the production of the DNA- copies of genes; the incorporation of the copies of genes in DNA of bacteria Escherichia coli; the cultivation of bacteria for subsequent sekvenirovaniya of genes and identification of the coded by them proteins and the incorporation of the desired genes into the genome of yeast(s) for the purpose of the production of bioethanol. Because of the rapid and precise motions of the robotized hand the automated system accomplishes the task into hundred assigned by it and are even thousands of times more rapid than this can make men. The authors plan to use the new automated system for creating the genetically modified strain of yeast(s), capable of splitting the carbohydrates of the fibers of maize stems. The previous attempts at the use for these purposes of the genetically modified bacteria did not crown by success. At present ethanol is produced only from that being containing in corn and other crops of starch. Strains of saccharomycetes utilized for this make it possible to obtain about three gallons of ethanol from the bushel of corn. The authors consider that the strain, at creation of which they work, will make it possible to increase the effectiveness of processing the vegetable raw material by 10%. The work on the creation of robot- biologist, which was begun in 2004, was carried out together by the colleagues of the service of the agricultural studies THE USA and Hudson Control Group (g. of springfild, the state of New Jersey).
